MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene. It belongs to the mitochondrial-derived peptide class, a small group of signalling peptides read from the mitochondrial genome rather than the nuclear genome.
In the published preclinical literature, MOTS-c has been characterised at the molecular and cellular level for its association with the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and for its translocation between cellular compartments under metabolic stress, where it has been studied as a signal in mitochondrial-to-nuclear gene-expression chemistry.
